KIDsmART Grows Up
April 2, 2009 --Almost every day New Orleanians have a similar experience. We pick up the paper and buried somewhere in its pages is a story about another way New Orleans public schools are failing its students. We all think it disappointing and wish that something could be done but usually nothing changes. For artists, Campbell Hutchinson and Alison Stewart, the line in the sand came 10 years ago when they read that New Orleans public schools could no longer subsidize the arts in its curriculum. So this husband and wife team decided to do something about it. During a long car ride they hatched an idea that would bring teaching artists to the classrooms. Their pilot program was launched at Fisher Elementary School with 20 children. KIDsmART was born.

Today, KIDsmART programs are in 11 schools throughout the city and serve over 3400 children. The visual and performance arts are taught to encourage creative thinking and are a fundamental of KIDsmART’s philosophical approach to education. This method aims for a personal connection in the classroom between teacher, student and art. Arts integration also works in professional development of teachers by showing them new ways to communicate to their students.

On Tuesday, April 21, KIDsmART will celebrate their 10th birthday by hosting a party at KIPP: McDonogh 15 School for the Creative Arts to showcase their students, teachers, programs and successes. The party will feature a Hip-Hopera performance by the students choreographed by a KIDsmART teaching artist as well as show off their new look and logo. More information on the celebration follows.
